Dragon Hunting in The Woods

20140305-112839.jpg

With the aid of a few duck eggs which i paid 40p each for and a handwritten sign we embarked on a dragon hunt…The bigger children (7&9) were in on the Dragon hunt set up today & did really well making believe for Mila (4), they were rewarded with a find of some ‘real’ eggs from something unknown 🙂

Our hunt started at Ogmore castle, we crossed the stepping stones and headed into the woods to the ruins of CANDLESTON CASTLE/MERTHYR MAWR & it’s surrounding sand dunes. (South Wales)

Here’s how we got on…

We started at Ogmore castle where we walked across the treacherous waters via the stepping stones..

20140305-113254.jpg

Once we had explored Ogmore castle (free to enter) we got back in the car and headed 5 minutes up the road to Merthyr Mawr…

Once there i placed a sign I had made discreetly on a tree…

20140305-113506.jpg

The kids discovered the sign..

20140305-113540.jpg

and our dragon hunt began….

20140305-113616.jpg

I hid some hatched eggs in the wood

20140305-113701.jpg

20140305-113719.jpg

we carried on through the woods heading for the castle ruins..

20140305-113801.jpg

20140305-113814.jpg

As the kids explored the ruins I discreetly placed our dragon eggs!
I’d used duck eggs which i drew on and spray with hairspray and a dusting of glitter…

20140305-113942.jpg

As we explored the castle…

20140305-114010.jpg

WE STUMBLED ON THE DRAGON EGGS!!!

20140305-114051.jpg

AND THEN SOME MORE AS WE HEADED BACK THROUGH THE WOODS!!

20140305-114226.jpg

20140305-114233.jpg

We then headed for the sand dunes to search for anymore signs…

Check out our over Magical Make Believe Ideas!

20140305-114313.jpg

And we found dragon footprints..

20140305-114349.jpg

and more eggs (real eggs this time!)

20140305-114454.jpg

We finished our day rolling down the dunes..

20140305-114532.jpg

We took our dragon eggs home and put them in the airing cupboard to keep warm, the next day we discovered one of the eggs had hatched and we now have a naughty dragon on the loose around the house….

20140305-114707.jpg

So rather than take any chances we returned to the woods with our other dragon egg and made a nest for it to sit in back within its natural environment…

20140305-114827.jpg

Out dragon hunt really was a magical adventure achieved with minimum effort for the price of a few duck eggs….

Rediscovering Sea Dragon Eggs

20140728-122523-44723829.jpg
We discovered sea dragon eggs once before and couldn’t believe our luck when we stumbled over them once again!

Here’s how we got on…

I secretly painted a hard boiled duck egg with sparkly nail varnish and when the kids weren’t looking I placed it in a nest made of seaweed in a small cove along the coast…

20140728-122558-44758445.jpg

20140728-122606-44766285.jpg
I made some dragon footprints leading from the sea shore to the nest..

20140728-122656-44816327.jpg

20140728-122706-44826338.jpg
I then sat on the picnic blanket whilst the kids set out to beach comb…

20140728-122808-44888827.jpg

20140728-122829-44909693.jpg
And then they reappeared from the rocks clutching something…

20140728-123055-45055211.jpg
It was a dragons egg!!!

20140728-123136-45096167.jpg
We examined it…

20140728-123238-45158897.jpgand sniffed it…

20140728-123301-45181502.jpgand Mila took me to see the dragon footprints they’d found..

20140728-123338-45218000.jpgNoah gave the it once over too…
20140728-131204-47524356.jpg

20140728-131209-47529866.jpg

20140728-131217-47537611.jpg
Who’d of thought that we’d stumble over dragon eggs again 😉

Sea Dragons

20140721-165021-60621220.jpgDid you know that sea dragons come from the sea on beautiful summer days hiding in the haze of sea mist? They lay their eggs upon the crests of waves that lap against the shore.
These eggs are elusive, and if you are lucky enough you may stumble upon them.
If you are lucky enough to find these elusive and sparkling eggs treat them with care and throw them back into the waves….

We found some sea dragon eggs.

(Shhhhhh… I made our dragon eggs using Jawbreakers and nail varnish and with a dose of slight of hand bought the magic alive)

Here’s how I did it….

I started by given a few jaw breakers a few coats of sparkly nail varnish…

20140721-165400-60840759.jpg

20140721-165407-60847490.jpgwith the aid of a cut sponge and slight of hand I made some dragon tracks…

20140721-165511-60911967.jpgI told Mila about the sea dragons, their elusiveness & how if we looked really carefully we may find traces of them…she picked out things she thought may be evidence…

20140721-165641-61001801.jpgand sure enough with a little gentle guidance she stumbled upon dragon footprints…

20140721-165735-61055434.jpgI lay our eggs in wait as everyone played in the sea with an underlying hope of glimpsing a sea dragon..

20140721-165837-61117355.jpgThe eggs lay where the crest of the waves meets the sun kissed shoreline…

I waited and watched as Mila came out of the sea…

20140721-165955-61195259.jpgand then she stumbled upon the strange sparkly blue eggs…

20140721-170035-61235495.jpg

20140721-170053-61253212.jpg

20140721-170108-61268393.jpgshe listened to them and said she could hear popping…. DRAGON BABIES LEARNING TO SPOUT WATER!!…

20140721-170219-61339165.jpgI lay some more but they were left undiscovered…

20140721-170305-61385316.jpgwe made pictures in the sand of what we thought a water breathing sea dragon would look like..

20140721-170453-61493235.jpgwe kept our sea dragon eggs for the afternoon and then decided to return to the shore and throw them back into the crests of the waves….

20140721-170630-61590511.jpg
It was a magical find and we’ll remember our discovery of sea dragons forever…

Emergencies, Ducks & Dragons

20130513-160247.jpg

The weekend was good even given an apparent return to Autumn.

It started on Friday with a very valuable lesson being learnt by all, it got a bit messy & evidently gory but we can now confirm that all children within the household know what to do in emergency situations & are capable of ringing 999 should the situation ever arise. Five Guys Dining

Five Guys Cardiff

This week I stepped out from behind my screen for a very special date with a whole load of bloggers which I have grown to know over the past year. Not one to socialise without the children in tow I decided be brave and with a little comfortable prompting from some lovely ladies I headed to Five Guys in The Red Dragon Centre in Cardiff to sample a bite to eat and some blogger company. I’ve never considered myself as a sociable blogger so for me to step into the realms of the blogging world and meet up with these ladies was quite a big deal. 20 Ways to Get Kids Excited About Walking

Ways to Get Kids Excited About Walking

Often a great way to get kids enthused about getting outdoors is to offer an incentive. This doesn’t have to be huge and the smallest of offerings can make the biggest impact. Shoes

20130516-223107.jpg

Shoes.

It’s been a chaotic week here at Family Days, it feels like not much has been achieved as I seem to have concentrated more behind the scenes and a little less on the frontline, we’ve had various bugs accompany us for the last 4 days so have been graced with some of the children off school which is always a pain when school runs still need to be done for the uninfected ones.

Eventually we’ll all go down with it, one by one, it will come full circle and start again. The joys of primary school years. Seem to be well on top of the nits though, which is good. [Read more…] about Shoes
