Walking The Blorenge

the blorenge

Wales has some truly beautiful scenery and Abergavenny is nestled amongst some of the most spectacular views you’ll find. Blorenge is one of a cluster of mountains that surround it.

Towering over the Welsh landscape, it is a wonderful place for a stroll with minimum effort but maximum sense of achievement and a feast for the eyes.

There’s not really any energetic climbing involved as you pretty much start your walk high up from a car park situated on top of the mountain. We combined our walk with a stop off 5 minutes down the road as we explored the landscape adjoining the Lamb and Fox pub. This boasts as being the highest pub in Wales.

Here’s how our walk looked…

First we explored the iron works.

And then we drove up the road to the Fox Hunters car park to climb up onto the Blorenge.

There was a very well marked path which was easy to follow. The only gradient was at the end of the walk as you climbed up onto the hill where the trig point was but this too was easily navigatable.

Our 4 year old had no problems clambering over the rocks.

Once you reach the top the whole of Abergavenny is laid out beneath you, with the Sugarloaf and Skirrid mountains to marvel at. It really is stunning.

In 1952, Sir Harry Llewellyn rode Foxhunter to take Gold in the Helsinki Olympic. The remains of the horse are buried near the car park, with a small memorial dedicated to him. We walked to the memorial on the tip of the hillside.

Sir Harry Llewellyn himself died at the age of 88 in November 1999, at his home in Abergavenny. His ashes were scattered over the Blorenge mountain.

The Blorenge

It was the first time we had explored the Blorenge and have already decided that it is an ideal walk for the autumn/winter months. We went back for a Magical Pearl Hunt and it kept our 2-year-old walking for miles!

Directions

For the Blorenge walk park at the Foxhunter car park, near the masts on the Blorenge. Take the B4246 road from Abergavenny to Blaenavon and turn off near the Keeper’s Pond at the top, heading for the two big masts.

  1. Looking to walk up the 3 hills around Abergavenny
Skirrid Fawr, Sugar loaf and Blorenge.
Not all in the same day though.
    Great site with good advice.
Will explore it more for other walks and places to visit.

  2. This really is a beautiful part of South Wales and if you do happen to find yourself in the locality, then the Blorenge Walk is a must! That said, the neighbouring Sugarloaf and Skirrid walks are also well worth the effort. I struggle to pick my favourite from the 3 so if I were you, just do all 3 and then try to make your own mind up! Enjoy the experiences…
