St David’s Day / Welsh Themed Day
We LOVE Wales and being Welsh gives us a great opportunity to celebrate St David’s Day. We decided to embark on a Welsh themed day. Here’s what we did…
Firstly we set about scene setting got our traditional Welsh tea.
For a ‘Pot of leeks’ we rolled up pieces of paper into tubes. We then made slits in the end with scissors and painted them green. We put them in a garden flower pot to make a nice centrepiece for our Welsh themed table.
Next, we made love spoons.
We bought wooden spoons for 24p each and decorated them.
Then we made cardboard cutouts to hang on the wall.
We made some daffodil hangers by folding a piece of paper like a concertina and drawing a simple template of a daffodil. We cut the daffodil out and folded the paper back out. After painting them we hung them to make pretty displays.
We used a roll of wrapping paper which we drew a Welsh scene on. We then taped it to the wall and painted it. Next, we used cardboard to make the window frame. We finished off by making a vase of daffodils to go on the windowsill.
We drew pictures of traditional Welsh costumes and hung them with our love spoons.
We learnt some Welsh words and discovered where Wales is on the globe atlas.
We then went to the supermarket to buy Welsh foods for our tea.
Welsh Cakes
225g/8oz self-raising flour, sieved
110g/4oz (preferably Welsh) salted butter
1 egg
Handful of sultanas
milk, if needed
85g/3oz caster sugar
extra butter, for greasing
We mixed together all our ingredients to make a dough. We then cooked our cakes in a frying pan over a medium heat. We cooked each side for a few minutes until brown. We finished with a dusting of caster sugar.
We also made Welsh rarebit.
And we bought some yummy Welsh fudge and daffodils.
We made some Welsh hats to hang using card and paper doilies.
We found some Welsh slate and coal whilst walking in the valleys.
And we were ready to put together our tea. We set the table and made a menu using out hats and chalk. And then we got dressed in our traditional dress.
After tea, we watched some of the TV programmes that I watched as a child growing up in Wales.
