Reservoirs & Steam Trains In The Beacons

Brecon Beacons

The Brecon Beacons is home to some beautiful reservoirs which are especially glorious during the autumn when the hillsides and woodlands surrounding them burst into an array of spectacular colours. It’s a real autumnal treat.

With the sky bright blue and the air chilly we decided to take a drive through the hills and stop off along the way to bask in the reflective awesomeness that is their to easily be found.

We visited three reservoirs on our drive through.

Llwyn-on

Pontsticill (This is where we walked along the steam train track)

Talybont

Brecon Beacons

We started by driving north on the A470 past Merthyr Tydfil until we got to the pull in lay by alongside Llwyn on marked on the map here.

Here we got out of the car and crossed the stile to the water’s edge and spent some time throwing pebbles in from the shore.

Next stop: Southern end of Pontsticill

We drove back where we’d came from in a southerly direction and headed east to Pontsticill. We stopped off at the southern end and watched the Brecon Mountain railway steam train passing along the waters edge in the distance.

We then headed to the northernly end of the reservoir and parked our car outside Plas Dolygaer outdoor pursuits centre. From here we walked through the forest down to the waters edge and followed the path alongside the train track. This was fabulous to watch the steam train passing.

The Brecon Beacons are stunning all year around and really are the perfect place to just drive through and stop off at places along the way as they take your fancy.
