‘For fine diners of posh tea and cake as you clickety clack…

through the mountains on a train ride to the beach and back’

Everybody loves to take a train ride and with thoughts of fine dining and beautiful scenery we decided to take a train ride with a difference and transform our journey into a magical afternoon tea part as we whizzed through the countryside.

And it turned out to be a lovely memory that as a family we’ll treasure for ever…

With a few simple props we turned an everyday train journey into an enchanting adventure..

here’s how we did it..

We filled an old suitcase with all we’d need to lay our table once on the train…

A table cloth

Cake stand (selection of cakes & sarnies)

Teapot (bottle of squash)

Plastic champagne flutes

Napkins

A small chalk board to ‘reserve’ our table

A battery operated candle

Plastic flowers

Some light weight fabric to dress the window (sellotape to attach)

I knocked up some special train tickets a few days before to present to the kids…this was done with some basic clip art pictures and a ‘write on’ photo app on my iPhones…there are loads available. Once designed and printed i just added glitter and placed in a folded gold piece of card and tied with a bow.

These tickets were placed in our family

Weekend Box

as a magical treat.

I booked our tickets in advance to ensure we had a table…this magical tea can be set up in a matter of minutes so a long journey isn’t essential..

You can book your train tickets direct through Arriva Trains Wales and reserve tables for your journey. No booking or card fees.

We set up our table, laid out our goodies and settled down to enjoy the ride.

We lapped up the beautiful scenery and made the most of it by having a countryside colour hunt..

The kids loved spotting greens and browns…and getting a different view of the hills we walk in…

it was gorgeous..

Our train route started in Newport, South Wales, went up through the mountains and ended in the seaside town of Aberystwyth…it really was a stunning route. our journey entailed one change in Shrewsbury. From beginning to end point our journey was 3 hours with a 20 minute stop at Shrewsbury.

The kids thought it was really cool when the refreshments trolley wheeled through the train…

Once we reached Aberystwyth we headed for the beach which was only a five minute walk from the station…We spent around 4 hours there before heading back to the station for our return journey which we had planned in time to watch the sun set…
