Family Day Out in Greenwich with Thames Clippers

Thames Clippers

A few weeks ago we were invited to join MBNA Thames Clippers on a family day of sightseeing from the river and exploring Greenwich and the Greenwich Peninsula. And, with delight, we accepted. It was a chance for just the 12 year old and I to spend some quality girly time together.

Cutty Sark

We started the day by boarding the boat at the London Eye Pier before cruising down the river Thames to Greenwich to visit the historic Cutty Sark, Britain’s only surviving tea clipper and fastest ship of her time. And it’s most definitely worth a visit!

Lunch at Rivington Grill

Once we’d finished exploring the Cutty Sark – taking in the interactive tour and admiring the spectacular views from the helm – we headed to the Rivington Grill for lunch. It’s located in the Greenwich Picturehouse in the town centre and we were treated to a feast of culinary delights which we amply enjoyed. And the best bit is that Rivington Grill are offering a ‘kids eat free’ offer (with a maximum of two children per paying adult over the summer holidays) so it’s ideal for family dining.

Cable Car

After lunch it we jumped back on the Thames Clippers boat and headed a little further up the river to North Greenwich. Here we took a ride on the Emirates Airline cable cars. They go over the river Thames from Greenwich Peninsula to Royal Docks. We did the return journey so we went across and back.

The journey itself is 1km each way and the maximum height you reach over the river is 90m. It’s actually quite a spectacular experience offering a great for a birdseye view over London.

At just under 300ft, the Emirates Air Line cable car is the highest observation point over the Thames. It spans across the river between the Greenwich Peninsula (near The O2) and the Royal Docks (near ExCeL London). I’d told, the cable car is considered a ‘must do’ leisure attraction among Londoners and tourists alike. Just some of the sights and attractions that can be seen include Canary Wharf, St Paul’s Cathedral, historic Greenwich, the Shard, The O2, the Thames Barrier, Royal Docks and Queen Elizabeth II Olympic Park.

MBNA Thames Clippers prices vary depending on your destination. A River Roamer is best suited to families and allows you to get on and off as many times as you like during the day which is great for sightseeing. The Family River Roamer ticket (for two adults and three children) costs just £32.60.
