Abandoned Lighthouse Adventure

Whiteford Lighthouse and Cwm Ivy Tor are located on the coast at Whiteford Point near Whiteford Sands, on the Gower peninsula, south Wales. The lighthouse is the only remaining cast iron lighthouse surrounded by the sea in the United Kingdom. It was built in 1865. The tower is 61ft high and made up of eight courses of cast iron plates. The light was extinguished in 1921. When the tide is out you are able to walk up to and around the lighthouse. It’s strangely beautiful.

To get there by car: B4295 to Llanrhidian, then C road to Llanmadoc. Continue through the village till you get to Cwm Ivy. A private car park with an honesty box is on the right hand side of the road, once parked head down the hill and through the National Trust gate towards Cwm Ivy Tor. You will come to Burrows cottage on your right nestled in a tall treed forest, head on the path through here and onto the sand dunes beach, you will see the lighthouse in the distance to the right.

Our walk took around 3 hours, beach combing and playing along the way, we found bottled treasure and roman coins which I planted secretly along the route.

Here’s how we got on.
